Depression still has a negative stigma attached to the condition, and therefore is often suffered in silence, undiagnosed and untreated. Since 2020 and the global situation, WHO has stated that 1 out of 3 people are currently struggling with either Depression or Anxiety. I have seen this aggravated in clients especially during the winter months with seasonal affective depression as well.

Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include:

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue
  • Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., inability to sit still, pacing, hand wringing) or slowed movements or speech
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Depression is not a choice and it is not something we “snap out of” or a case of “pulling yourself together”.   Depression very often has two companions, Anxiety and Fear, and they tend to partner with Low Self-esteem and a warped Self-image. These negative emotions can deplete your life energy and leave you feeling dark and despondent as feelings of rejection and sadness weighs down on your mind and soul.

This can affect your relations at home, school, work and socially, as everything feels like a challenge, even simply getting ready for your day. When the depression is acute, you may stop caring about everything, including losing relationships, people and possessions. I too have danced with the Black Dog in my life, and I remember feeling like there was simply no way of getting my Mojo back at a stage, especially when my body collapsed, a final screaming red flag, as I had no intention of leaving my daughters behind.

In the midst of depression, we lose precious time with our loved ones, we lose focus, we lose interest in what gave us joy before, we spiral out of control, we possibly experience uncharacteristic anger outbursts, mood swings, or lethargy, apathy, or – on the opposite of the coin – we completely immerse ourselves in work or projects, also sometimes to avoid turning inwards and going to the root cause.

This is crucial to realiseour outside reality is merely a mirror of what is going on internally.

If the outside is chaotic and depressed, we need to start with healing from the root cause upwards and outwards, and not by suppressing, denying or drowning ourselves with causes or possible ‘quick fixes’ that further drain our life energy.

To begin the journey, we need to understand how our minds work, conscious and subconscious. The subconscious mind stores all our emotions and memories, all the good ones and yes, all the bad ones too. It is like an old outdate programme running in your subconscious mind, and our conscious mind being only 5% of the mind, it is almost impossible to effectively create lasting changes if we do not change the program in the 95% part which is our subconscious mind. We will simply run out of willpower.

We need to take back control of our lives, by taking control of what is happening in our thoughts and subconscious mind. By getting rid of negative emotions and beliefs that we have been conditioned into from childhood, we can free ourselves to live on the “cause” side of life and not the “effect” side, by consciously creating from the inside out.
